A touring bike’s job is designed to accomplish two tasks- to carry you and your gear.  Good touring bikes will be able to do adding ease and comfort.  The Surly Long Haul Trucker or LHT, is designed as a true touring bike with a low bottom bracket, long chain stays and long wheelbase.  All these things will help to provide stability, absorb bumps and vibration and to withstand the  perils of touring.

It has ample tire clearance for larger tires (larger tires soak up a lot of road static) with room for fenders too. The frame’s tubing is thicker-walled and larger-diameter than standard road and sport-touring frames, and this pre-tunes it for the weight of cargo. And more prepared than your average boy-scout with braze-ons for everything from racks to water bottle cages to spare spokes.  The LHT will tackle any trip you throw at it; from a short grocery run in Portland OR to a cross continent tour down Central America.

Add racks, fenders, pedals, and bags and then, well… go someplace.

“The Surly Long Haul Trucker (LHT) has been heavily spotted this year, gracing the Adventure Cycling bike racks at least once a week. What attributes to this bike’s popularity? Let’s take a look at it piece by piece…The Surly LHT isn’t going to be a fast and nimble bike by any stretch, so don’t expect it to get you anywhere quickly. It will, however, give you a very smooth and comfortable ride once you get rolling, and handle all the gear you can throw at it…the price is hard to beat…” American Adventure Cycling
