Recycling & Green Initiatives

There’s no way around it- operating a business generates waste.  We recognize this fact, and are doing our best for Oregon and beyond by reducing our impact.  We believe the extra effort and time it takes not only helps reduce CO2 emissions but strengthens our community.

Here’s a sampling of what we’re doing at Bike n Hike to help the planet:

We Ride Bikes!

• We encourage employees to ride to work or take mass transit by providing secure bike parking and storage space.
• We participate in the Bike Commute Challenge every September! (2009 the Portland location won the Bike Shop 9-15 Employees Category!)

• We recycle all paper, cardboard, and plastic.
• We recycle all cans and glass.
• We save up and recycle shipping wastes like plastic packaging, plastic bags and Styrofoam.
• We annually sort and recycle over one TON of metal parts, like worn out chains, cranks, and other metals.
• We recycle outdated electronics with Free Geek.

We Reuse !

• Maybe you’ve been to Hopworks Urban Brewery and seen the bike frames above their bar? Many of them were damaged or warranty frames from Bike n Hike.
• We donate chains, spokes, and tires to a number of local artisans like Resource Revival who turn these products into functional and artistic products.
• We save the bike boxes and packaging from new bikes and resell for a nominal $7.

We Reduce!

• We employ energy-saving practices and turn off lights, compressors, and computers when not in use.
• We choose to use recycled paper products, such as printer paper, towels, toilet paper, and rags.
• We’ve retrofitted the lights in all stores with electronic ballast fluorescent and metal halide fixtures through a partnership with Pacific Lamp Wholesale.
